What each of these services actually involves
Flatwork is the bulk of residential concrete: driveways, sidewalks, patios, walkways and slabs. The finished surface is the part you see, but the job is decided underneath it — how well the sub-base is compacted, how thick the slab is poured, and where the control joints are cut. A driveway that will hold a truck is not the same pour as a garden path, and pricing them the same is a warning sign.
Decorative concrete covers stamped, coloured, stained, polished and exposed-aggregate finishes. These sit on the same structural slab, so the base work still decides how long they last. Stamped and coloured surfaces need resealing on a cycle; ask how often before choosing a finish.
Structural and repair work
Foundations, footings, steps and retaining walls carry load, which changes what the job requires: reinforcement, depth below the frost line, and drainage behind any wall holding back soil. A retaining wall without drainage is a wall waiting for hydrostatic pressure to push it over.
Repair, resurfacing and removal is the honest half of the trade. Not every damaged slab needs replacing — surface spalling and shallow cracking can often be resurfaced. But a slab that has settled, heaved or cracked through its full depth is telling you the base failed, and resurfacing only hides that for a season.
Cutting, grading, sealing and the smaller jobs
Concrete cutting opens an existing slab for utilities, drainage or an addition. Grading and levelling corrects the fall so water runs away from the structure rather than toward it — often the actual cause when a slab keeps failing in the same spot. Sealing is maintenance rather than construction: it slows freeze-thaw damage and salt attack, and it is the cheapest way to extend the life of concrete you already own.
